Arthur Waagen was well known for his oriental figures and his animal bronzes. Originally German, he was a  member of the movement in the 19th century that specialized in the realistic representation of animals.
Celebrated in his lifetime for his Orientalist-style bronze sculptures, the artist has frequently depicted images associated with North African Muslim culture, iconography of sport hunting, and themes of historical or popular culture. Born in 1833 in East Prussia, Waagen went to France to pursue his artistic career and he set up a studio along the rue Cours-de-Vincennes in Paris. Waagen regularly exhibited at Parisian salons from 1869 to 1887 and died in 1898.
